Design Principles - Task 2: Analysis
INSTRUCTIONS
TASK 2: ANALYSIS
This task requires us to assess, document, investigate and analyse the existing artwork we chose in task 1. We will need to study the design principles found in that work, as well as the size, placement purpose, effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG goal that we have chosen. We are then needed to write a 300-350 word visual analysis on the artwork.
UNSDG goal chosen: (1) No Poverty
Chosen artwork:
Visual Analysis:
This artwork is physically painted and it is obvious to the eye as you can see the brush strokes in the red coloured background and the blistering paint surrounding the little boy. The main subject of the painting is the little boy sitting on some sort of tree that has been cut down. It appears that the boy is about to stand up. The artist painted the little boy in the bottom half of the frame. In terms of visual colours, the main colour is red and it is used as the background. The main subject is painted using the colours black and white. Overall, it is a very minimal design with a deep meaning.
The painting does not have much going on, however, the emphasis of the image is on the black and white painting of the little boy as it is the only subject. The colour used for the little boy may not be bright as the background but due to it being a darker colour than the background, it creates this dominance to the painting which makes the viewer focus more to it. Apart from that, the contrast created is from the major difference of colours used. The background being such a bright and eye-catching colour whilst the main subject being a very dull and non-vibrant colour, black and white. Other than that, this artwork also shows balance as the subject is not lopsided.
This artwork was painted by the artist Patrick Dodoo. It was painted in 2020 during the pandemic (COVID-19). The artist created a series of pieces during the pandemic as he was going through this thing he called "Isolation Chronicles", which was a creation of time dawned to the ground. His artworks become metaphors of people's sentiments and vulnerability, he represents the voiceless through his paintings. The goal behind this painting is to raise awareness of the sustainable development goal (SDG), which is (1) No Poverty, to the world and educate individuals. Basically, the painter is trying to show the viewer that due to poverty, the little boy is struggling. However, without poverty, the little boy would not be struggling. FEEDBACK
Week 3: Add balance to the visual analysis, mention the goal used, mention that the little boy is the only subject in emphasis. After adding these things, move on to the final project.
Week 4: No adjustments needed.
Week 5: Last minute note, explain how the painting represents no poverty in the last paragraph.
