TASKS

Task 2: Typographic Exploration & Communication

We are given 3 texts by Mr. Vinod and we must choose 1 out of the 3 to express it typographically.  We must do it in a 2-page editorial spread (200mm x 200mm) per page. Also, no images are allowed.

Week 6
Before beginning on the task, I decided to watch the video tutorial on the Youtube playlist Mr. Vinod provided. Afterwards, I downloaded the editorial texts on Facebook. I briefly went through all three texts and I decided to go for the second one: A code to build on and live by.

In week 6, I didn't really do any work for this task as I had other assignments to focus on.

Week 7
In week 7, I started to think of different designs for the headline. Out of the words from the headline, I chose the word "Code" to design. The designs I made were not much different from each other, I just did little changes to see which one looks best.

I experimented using the left-aligned text and also the centered-align text. There's not much design to this, however, I had an idea of putting some sort of code behind the headline... a HTML code perhaps.

Week 8
From the 18th of May to 22th of May, my mother and I went to Sarawak to visit my father as I had no classes from the 18th till 'Independent Learning Week' ends. Hence, I was not able to do any work during that time. Once I got back from my trip, I had to start working on this task since it is due by the end of the week.

I played around in InDesign and managed to create three different layouts. These are the layouts:

(23/05/23)

After creating these designs, I personally like the third one best. The other two are nice but the third one just looks right to me. I like how the word "code" is right at the side, it represents a code in a HTML. I even added a HTML code behind the headline, I personally like it a lot.

Specific Feedback: Stay aware of the gutter.

Week 7
General Feedback: Bodoni is not a good font to use for body text.
Specific Feedback: Did not receive specific feedback as I was absent.

Week 8
General Feedback: Independent learning week. No feedback.
Specific Feedback: Independent learning week. No feedback.

REFLECTION

Experience:
This task was only 3 weeks long. In the first week I was quite busy with other projects. In the second week I was in Sarawak so I was not able to do much work. During week 3 is when I did most of my work. At first I was quite stressed knowing that I haven't done much progress and the deadline is due at the end of the week, however, when I properly started the work, I had fun creating different layouts and designs. Although it was kind of difficult thinking of ideas whilst keeping in mind of everything Mr. Vinod said, it wasn't too bad overall.

Observations:
Similar to task 1, I would observe other students' work in hopes to gain some ideas and inspiration. It's very interesting to see other students' work. Other than that, I would say that if a student does not watch any of the Youtube tutorials by Mr. Vinod, they will struggle completing this task.

Findings:
Ever since the first project, I realised that I look at designs of many things differently now.  Things such as magazine layouts, food packaging, website layouts, etc. I would always think about the font that people use and how some things are not aligned. This proves that I'm actually learning something and not wasting anyone's time. I will always come back to all of the tasks I've done so far for this module when creating layouts and designs.

Summary: Basically in this video it gives a tutorial on how to use InDesign 2023. It shows how to use the different tools in this app. Watching this video helped me get used to InDesign which also helped me create the different layouts without stressing too much. If you're new to InDesign, this is a good video to watch.
